Cloth shoes for baby – Tutorial

December 28th, 2007 · 11 Comments

Let me show you how to make cloth shoes for baby adapted from my pattern for soft leather shoes. I recommend you to read it all through before starting. The pattern is for personal use only (pattern – pdf).

Cut out from every piece of the pattern two pieces of outer fabric and two from lining. I have used cotton and wool felt on these shoes. Cut the heel part a bit wider than the pattern (about 0,5cm on each side).

Place inner and outer parts of the toe right sides together and stich the upper edge.

Turn right sides out, iron and sew all around.

Put heelparts right sides together and sew around with normal seemallowance in top and double on the sides. Leave an 1,25cm opening on each side 1,25cm from the top. This will be openings for the elastics.

Cut clean the corners, turn and iron. Sew right across the part twice. Once above and once underneath the openings. This makes the chasing.

Thread the elastic. I like to use 1 cm wide elastic about 3 cm wider than the heelpart itself.

Sew along bottom line of heel part.

Sew the toe part on to the outer part only of the sole.

Sew on the heel part.

Fold the shoe flat.

Pin on the inner sole.

Sew around the sole, leave an opening for turning.

The opening need not be more than about 3-4cm. Turn the sole inside out (leaving you with a shoe inside out). Sew the opening close by hand.

Cut holes for elastics in the toe part. Careful not to cut into the outer fabric. The holes are about 1,5 cm from the edge – about 3 cm apart.

Thread one end of the elastics through both the holes and attach it to the other end. Cut off eccess elastic. Turn the elastic slightly to hide the seam.

Turn inside out and repeat for the other shoe.

If you plan on using the shoes for walking babies you should concider using a non slip sole.

These are so cute! I’m not sure witch I like better the leather or the cloth. Now I’m going to have to try them both.
    Thanks again.
